HISTORY
'IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK'
Established in 1888, The Booroodabin – affectionately known as The Boo – has welcomed more colourful characters than a blockbuster movie.
Back in the day, Queensland was a whole different world and The Boo was the go-to spot for gentlemen and high society.
Back in 1888, the ladies at The Boo had to sit on the sidelines, cinched into tight corsets, balancing big hats and watching the gents have all the fun on the green. While the men were busy strategising their next bowl, the women were probably thinking “just wait until one day I get a turn, I’ll bowl you over!’
Those early years, they had to content themselves with dainty sandwiches and polite conversation. In those early days, the ladies had their own seperate facilities far from the men’s, because mingling was a no-go. Fast forward to today and while the bowling greens co-ed, some things haven’t changed-the mens and women’s toilets are still at opposite ends of the club! Some traditions just have a way of sticking around!.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and The Boo has transformed into a lively venue.
Our menu is packed with everything from sizzling BBQs and juicy burgers to canapés that disappear faster than you can say “barefoot bowls.” And the desserts? They’re the cherry on top, and trust us, you won’t want to miss them! Plus, our packages include barefoot bowls—100% social and 100% fun—so you can roll your way to a good time with friends and family.
And let’s not forget our little renovation surprise: a Holden car jack holding up the main support beam! It’s a classic Boo story—just like the club itself, it’s resilient, a little quirky, and always ready for a laugh. So come on down to The Boo, where you can soak up the history, enjoy a game, feast on something fabulous, and be part of a story 125 years in the making. Cheers to making new memories at this old favourite!
'MOST CREATIVE USE OF A HOLDEN JACK'
Picture the hilarious scene that unfolded when 15 years ago the current management commenced their initial inspections of The Boo venue. They stumbled upon a scene straight out of ‘Looney Tunes’. They discovered a Holden car jack propping up the main structural support bearer of the floor at The Boo! It was as if the venue had been secretly moonlighting as a makeshift auto repair shop.
Whoever thought to use that Holden jack must have fancied themselves contenders in the Construction Olympics, aiming not for gold medals, but for the “Most Creative Use of Duct Tape” award.
They realised just how shaky The Boo’s foundation truly was – quite literally!
